Oktober 2025: 5. Conference of the Academy of Sociology:
"Societal Challenges - Sociological Answers?”
The 5th Conference of the Academy of Sociology will take place at JGU Mainz from October 8 to 10, 2025. The theme of the conference is “Societal Challenges – Sociological Answers?” The conference will engage with the challenges facing today’s societies, be they the result of climate change, health epidemics, armed conflicts, economic upheavals, demographic ageing, human migration, multifaceted social inequalities, political populism, or public disinformation through, among other things, generative artificial intelligence. The conference will have a focus on the problem-solving capacities of sociology and how to transfer evidence-based findings to the public and to policy makers. However, a broad range of topics will be represented in the various sessions. Researchers in sociology and related disciplines with an analytical-empirical orientation are invited to present their current research.
Keynote talks are given by Nan Dirk de Graaf (University of Oxford) and Jennie E. Brand (UCLA). There will be panel discussions on "Evidence-based research and policy advice", "Communicating sociological findings in the media" and "From DEAL to DOA? The future of scientific journal publishing." At the conference, the AS is awarding, for the first time, the best sociological replication study with 1,500 €. This award is the first of its kind in sociology anywhere in the world.
Local organizers of the conference are Prof. Dr. Gunnar Otte and Prof. Dr. Natascha Nisic.
The deadline for submission of papers and extended abstracts is May 15, 2025.
The deadline for registration is August 31, 2025.
